Southern Studies Minor
A minor in Southern studies provides an excellent framework for examining how Southern identity serves as a way to understand and probe a wide array of questions as well as prepare students for work in a variety of graduate fields. This unique program complements many primary areas of study and enables students to pursue interests in Southern folklife, music, religion, history, literature, politics, anthropology and other topics.
For students considering graduate school, the Southern studies minor offers many advantages. Supported by our award-winning faculty, students undertake advanced work including independent research. Students gain skills in writing and analysis and get hands-on experience accessing primary sources materials. Undergraduates also establish valuable relationships by working with faculty whose research and teaching interests center on the South.

Note: Undergraduates may also pursue a cognate in Southern Studies by taking four SOST courses or concentrate in the field through the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (B.A.I.S.) degree program.
