Art Education M.A.T. (P – 12 Certification)
The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree in rt Education is designed for initial teacher certification in Art Education (K-12) and requires a minimum of 48 semester hours of graduate course work, including: 6 hours in Professional Education, 27 hours in the Teaching Content Area, and 15 hours of Directed Study. In addition, students must complete a minimum of 21 hours of prerequisites in the Studio Art and Art History areas in order to be certified by the State of South Carolina.
Each candidate must successfully complete a comprehensive examination.
Additionally, in order to be certified by the State of South Carolina, the candidate must pass a series of Praxis Subject Assessment Tests (Praxis II and PLT) and the EEDA exam.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will write age/grade appropriate quality lesson plans based on current teaching trends.
- Students will explore age/grade appropriate art making concepts and techniques.
- Students will reflect on art teachers' and/or their own teaching practice.
- Students will demonstrate integrity, intellectual spirit, justice, and stewardship through completion of directed teaching internship in public schools.
- Students will conduct research on selected art education topics.
- Students will synthesize knowledge of current issues and trends in the field.

Note: Successful applicants to the graduate programs in Art Education typically have an undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale. However, all parts of an application are carefully considered in admissions decisions.
