The Office of Research (OoR) advances the mission of the USC School of Medicine Greenville by fostering an environment that promotes innovation, integrity, collaboration, and excellence in biomedical, clinical, educational, translational and population health research. The Office provides strategic leadership, infrastructure, and resources to enable faculty, learners, and staff to pursue transformational research that improves the health of people in South Carolina.

Medical student research opportunities at the USC School of Medicine Greenville reflect the diverse interests of the student body and align with national priorities in meeting the complex health needs of local, regional and national populations. SOARinG Summer Research

Student Opportunities for Academic Achievement Through Research in Greenville, the SOARinG Program, serves as your hub for research experiences with faculty mentors from across the Prisma Health Sciences Center (USC, Clemson, Furman and Prisma Health Upstate).

The program builds your research skills through a six- to eight-week mentored research project that you’ll complete in the summer between your M1 and M2 years.

The program also features opportunities to apply for stipends, a seminar series, and journal club to prepare you to share your findings at the school’s annual research symposium, where you will have an opportunity to present your results to faculty, students and staff as a poster or an oral presentation based on a competitive selection process.

Additional Research Opportunities

Many students continue to participate in research throughout their time here. There are electives offered in the 3rd and 4th year to fit in research time, although some work on research independently from courses.

Students can join research interest groups at PHIRE (Prisma Health Inter-disciplinary Research Exchange) to pursue research in their field of choice. This collaborative group consists of clinicians and allied health professionals as well as researchers from USC Greenville, USC Columbia, Clemson, and Furman Universities. Students can find mentors and research projects by engaging with PHIRE.

Students are expected to complete an annual research disclosure form each academic year. Failure to submit a disclosure, or the submission of false, misleading, or incomplete information will result in a referral to HPC. For more details, please see the policy.
