Disasters and Climate-Ready Public Health, Certificate

Overview

The lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for public health professionals to navigate the emergency response structures more effectively at all levels of government. To meet the growing demands on the public health workforce to be versed in emergency management principles, as well as to be keenly aware of the health impacts of disasters and specifically those related to climate change, this certificate will engage students to build their knowledge and skillset in emergency preparedness and response. Graduates from this certificate will be equipped to lead their respective agencies, organizations, and companies to be ready for the public health impacts of disasters, in addition to addressing upstream issues that increase disaster risk.   

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of an all-hazards framework to disasters.
  2. Students will assess the public health implications and outcomes of disasters.
  3. Students will convey comprehension of public health approaches to climate and disaster events.
  4. Students will apply public health disaster and climate interventions best practices.
  5. Students will communicate synthesized knowledge of social and environmental determinants of disaster and climate vulnerability.

Admission

  • A four-year baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited institution
  • Grade point average 3.00/4.00 or higher
  • GRE scores – not required
  • For international applicants, a satisfactory score of one of the following is needed (this requirement may be waived for applicants that have earned a prior degree from a US institution):
    • TOEFL – minimum score of 90
    • IELTS- minimum overall band of 7.0
    • On Duolingo- minimum score of 115
